Prof. Sven Travis
Sven Travis is founder and sometimes director of the MFA Design + Technology programs at Parsons School of Design in New York. Design + Technology is one of the world’s leading digital media programs (the openFrameworks creative coding toolkit was initiated within DT at Parsons). Travis has taught and administered at Parsons for thirty years, where he is Associate Professor of Computational Media. He was the founding (now former) Dean of the School of Art, Media, and Technology at Parsons, and has served as Parsons Director of Advanced Computing, as Chair of Parsons Digital Design Department (which he founded), as Director of Parsons Center for New Design (which he co-founded), and as The New School Associate Provost for Technology R&D. Travis has been instrumental in the development of digital technology as a central element of Parsons curriculum. He has developed courses such as “Creativity and Computation” integrating computer programming and physical computing into the design environment. He is currently working to expand the Parsons Computer science curriculum by creating courses on the creative applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Travis has worked extensively in China, partnering with Tsinghua University, CAFA, CAA, Tongji University, and SIFA (Chongqing) among others. He and Parsons DT actively seek new partners.

Keyshot Title: Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science Training for the Designer- Challenges of Teaching AI and CS Within the Design Environment
With the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, the designer faces radical new technical challenges. For decades we have discussed the power and importance of teaching designers to code (computer programing). We have worked hard to erase the gap between the aesthetic (design) and the technical (computer science)—suggesting that “creative technologists” are the ideal new designer. Now AI presents even greater challenges. Designers must still learn computer programming, algorithmic thinking, data structures, and digital systems, but in addition they need to understand machine learning and other important aspects of artificial intelligence. With AI we face a learning paradigm that is more complicated but may possibly have an unexpected relationship to well established design process and design education. Why is it that effective AI researchers are so rare? Is it possible that fluency in ideation, iterative prototyping, and user testing prepares the designer for the creative application of new artificial intelligence techniques such as neural networks, evolutionary algorithms, and machine learning? Parsons Design+Technology is establishing new research projects and courses in the creative applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence that experiment with this interesting and important new approach. This talk will present current examples from Parsons DT curriculum demonstrating fascinating parallels between computer science, artificial intelligence, and the creative design process.
